The Brother MFC series (in particular the MFC-5895cw) seems like a decent all-in-one inkjet printer, but the driver software is so bad that it really makes it hard to recommend this product for anything. If you want to spend hours pulling your hair out, then this is all-in-one is for you, otherwise I would have to suggest looking elsewhere.
The number one thing you want to do with a printer is to print. But just getting a simple print driver installed for the Brother is terribly difficult. I work in the computer science field, I've installed a million printers, and this Brother is by far the worst. I've spent hours trying to install a print driver, I've been hours on the phone with Brother tech support (not very helpful), I've tried to install from more than 5 different computers (all running Windows 7), I've tried USB (multiple cables in case one is bad), I've tried LAN connections, I've tried wireless. I've even tried multiple different MFC-5895cw's (I have two here). I've installed as Administrator, I've installed as a normal user. I've installed from supplied DVD, I've installed from the latest driver downloaded from the net. I've installed on brand-new-computers with nothing but Windows 7 installed. And nothing works. It just shouldn't be this hard to get a printer working.
I bought this right before new year's when there was a promotion. Copy function, as expected, is easy and straightforward with little setup. For fax, I set it to telephone answering device mode. Then came the printer. First I set it up for wired Ethernet using a static IP address. Then I tried WiFi, using the manual method to enter the wireless network information. Note, I always run the Mac OS Software Update just to make sure I get any updates that might impact use of the printer.
After a day, I switched to USB, connected directly to my iMac. The iMac's printer and scanner sharing is turned on within Mac OS's system preferences. This was required for the software that I installed that allows me to print from my iOS devices -- iPhone, iPad. Note the software is not part of Brother's software - it's a free 3rd party application -- and it took a little tweaking but works great now! Very convenient to print from an iPad or iPhone! Lastly I took a big stack of documents and used the feeder to scan these pages directly to the desktop of my iMac. From the iMac I was able to set the file format for PDF.
Cons:
- No Ethernet or USB cables provided
- Have to open up the machine to access the Ethernet and USB port
- Unknowns include the life of the ink and the durability over time
Pros:
- WiFi, Wired Ethernet or USB
- Issue the scan command from the iMac
- Setting static IP was relatively painfree
- Good price
- Smaller than my old MFP
I've had a bad string of luck with printers in the last couple of years. I got this model at Office Depot for 59.99 on clearance(reg. 149.99). Because it was a floor model, it came without an installation disk or user guide, so I was expecting it to be a hassle to install. I downloaded the installation from the website and had it up and going within 20 minutes. It is by far the most user friendly printer I have ever owned. Had it for about 6 weeks now and it has yet to fall offline or jam paper. I print several times a day, I'm still using the cartidges that came with it and the ink level has barely budged at all. Extremely economical on ink. Good print quality. I couldn't be more thrilled with it, especially considering I got it at such a discount. By far the best printer I have ever owned. Would recommend it to anyone.
I have at least two operating printers at all times for my small home business. In the past, they have been mostly Epson's. About six months ago, I saw this Bother on sale at Staple's and bought it. I hate to call anything perfect, but it is! This is the perfect small business printer--prints great b/w pages quickly. Does a great job of making copies, too and scans flawlessly. I didn't realize until today that it will print index prints from a flash card, but it does! I'm still operating it wired, but soon, I'm planning to use it wirelessly. The ink refills--third-party ones--are very cheap from multiple sources. The only place it falters in is printing color photos. If you want anything but a reference print, use a machine with more than four ink colors, which is what this has. The machine is well-designed and built solidly! Just updating my review: Another six months has passed and this printer is still working non-stop! Nothing more to add or subtract.
